Engagement Rings for Men
Do men wear engagement rings ?
Well, the answer to this in todays society is yes. Many men do wear engagement rings as often these days rising prices and financial commitments mean that a long engagement is likely. Some couples prefer to refer to mens engagement rings as mens promise rings or commitment rings, and these can also be used in same sex partnerships.
What are mens engagement rings or male engagement rings like?
Many men opt for something masculine and robust, but beyond that, the world is your oyster. Mens engagement rings can be relatively plain, but could include a texture, an engraving that is meaningful, a diamond on the inside or outside or a motif that you like. In the past few years since the release of the "pirates of the Carribean" skull rings have been very popular for male engagement rings, and this can range from a small skull integrated into the band to a full on skull ring like that worn by Keith Richards. Mens promise rings which are to be worn by two partners can reflect a number of sentiments, and you may choose two commitment rings that are the same or similar in style or compliment each other.
Where can you buy engagement rings for men ?
Many jewellers will offer "off the shelf" options for engagment or commitment rings, but if you would like a special ring made to your specification you will need to find a bespoke jeweller to make something for you. You may have a clear idea of what you would like in which case a good jeweller can normally translate this to an idea for a ring. If you don't then a "mood board" is a good idea - this is a collection of ideas, colours, shapes, poems or sayings that you may like - working with you, a jeweller can help to formulate this into a ring idea. It often doesn't matter how obscure you think your idea is, a good jeweller will help to make something meaningful out of it. We have a guide here to help design your own engagement ring. This is directed at traditional engagement rings but it will equally work with mens engagement rings.
What metals are best to use for mens engagement rings ?
If you choose titanium or steel for male engagement rings, you will likely not be able to have something made for you as most jewellers do not work in these metals. However if you choose silver, gold, platinum or palladium for your ring, then you will be able to have any design that you like. Gold and platinum are the hardest wearing of these metals, palladium can sometimes be a little brittle so may not be so good if you have a job which is prone to heavy or manual work. Silver is good for heavy designs as in terms of budget it can be relatively cheap to use, but it will scratch over time so this is something you will need to think about.
Should engagement rings for men or commitment rings have stones in them ?
This is largely down to personal choice. If you do have stones, then diamonds are an obvious choice as they are hardwearing and classic. More men are choosing to have stones in their commitment rings these days, probably as a result of the wearing of stones by celebrities such as David Beckham. There are alternatives of course to diamonds and don't be frightened to talk to your jeweller about these. Many men choose stones to mirror their partners choice in a ring, and this is an excellent idea.
Whatever you choose, its worth some thought on several levels as a mans engagement ring or commitment ring is likely to be a significant purchase - but one that hopefully you should enjoy for many years to come.
